Ricky Gervais to Star in ‘Muppets’ Sequel

Ricky Gervais will star in the next Muppets movie, the comedian confirmed on Twitter, joking, “I have the biggest trailer but Kermit will spend some time in my sink.” According to the BBC, Gervais’ agent has also confirmed he will play the role, despite no announcement yet from Walt Disney Pictures.

Production for the sequel is set to begin in January, and will mark Gervais’ first starring role in a feature film since 2009’s The Invention of Lying. Gervais had filmed a cameo appearance for the Muppets’ big 2011 comeback movie, written by and starring Jason Segel, but the scene was cut.
Segel’s The Muppets featured a stacked cast – both felt- and flesh-based – and cameos from Jack Black, Dave Grohl and more. The film also featured original music from Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie, whose “Man or Muppet” won the Oscar for Best Song at the 2012 Academy Awards.
