Readers’ Poll: Who Has Had the Best Post-Band Solo Career?

Jack White released Blunderbuss, his first album as a solo artist, this week to great acclaim and commercial success. Having great success as a solo artist after becoming a star with a band is never a given: the bargain bins overflow with unwanted LPs by That Guy Who Used to Be in That Band. Other artists, though, have enjoyed spectacular careers after stepping away from an iconic band: Morrissey, Michael Jackson, Gwen Stefani, Paul Simon, Phil Collins, Justin Timberlake, Natalie Merchant, George Michael, Paul McCartney and Sting, just to name a few.
Our question for you this week is: What artist has had the best post-band solo career? Just to be clear, artists who hit it big as solo artists to begin with, like David Bowie, Beck, Prince and Madonna, do not qualify and will not be counted.
