Q-Tip: Tribe Called Quest Documentary ‘Just Not Done’

Late last week on Twitter, Q-Tip vented about the forthcoming Michael Rapaport-directed Tribe Called Quest documentary, Beats, Rhymes & Life, saying that Rapaport hadn’t “honored” the group’s “requests.” It seemed like he was probably concerned with the arguments between himself and Phife Dawg in the trailer. Now he says his issues are more aesthetic than personal.
“I can’t really go too much into it,” Q-Tip told Sirius, “but … people automatically assume I’m speaking just as the subject, that I’m not supporting it ’cause I ain’t like it. I’m a producer on the film, Tribe is a producer on the film. I’m speaking for the whole group… Different things need to be done edit-wise. The sentiment of the film is there, 80% is there, it’s just not done.” He suggested that Rapaport is rushing the film for its scheduled premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next month. “It’s not done yet… It’s just that simple,” Tip said.
