Q-Tip has been very vocal in his disapproval of Beats, Rhymes & Life, Michael Rapaport’s documentary about his legendary rap group A Tribe Called Quest. Mainly, he’s upset that Rapaport has not responded to his input regarding the film. In a Twitter rant in December, the rapper publicly pulled his support of the project, saying that Rapaport should “respect the band enough to honor our request regarding the film.” Now he’s claiming that Rapaport’s crew had plotted to drop Tribe’s producer credits and take them out of the loop regarding creative decisions.
In this clip from an MTV News interview, Q-Tip reads from an email he says he received accidentally from one of the movie’s producers. “First off, let’s close the billing block and put it on the poster so they can’t get on that,” the email reads. “They we’ll [bleep] them on everything else,” it continues. Q-Tip then says that getting the accidental email was a “godsend,” because it alerted him to the filmmakers’ hostility toward the group.
Michael Rapaport has responded to previous attacks by Q-Tip, at one time asserting that he kept the group out of the decision-making in order to preserve some journalistic integrity, but he and his representatives have yet to acknowledge this accidental email allegation.
