Premiere: Joy Kills Sorrow, ‘Jason’

Boston band taps Josh Ritter collaborators for first music video

Joy Kills Sorrow didn’t have to look very far for suitable collaborators for their first official music video. The Boston string band asked production company Shutter & String to help create the whimsical visuals for “Jason.” Premiering exclusively on, the clip finds a wooden puppet enlivening his home with a flight of fancy, dancing with his coatrack around the room.

Working with Shutter & String’s Liam Hurley and Sam Kassirer was an easy choice, singer Emma Beaton tells Rolling Stone. Kassirer produced Joy Kills Sorrow’s 2011 album This Unknown Science, and the duo earned attention with their puppet-based video for Josh Ritter’s “The Curse” (they’re members of Ritter’s band). Beaton and her bandmates suggested a few songs from This Unknown Science to Shutter & String, and Hurley and Kassirer picked “Jason.”

“I think we were all going for something that would have a bit of a story to tell, and that’s exactly what we ended up with,” Beaton says.
