Pixies Guitarist Joey Santiago Enters Rehab

Pixies announced Friday that the band’s longtime lead guitarist Joey Santiago has checked into a rehabilitation center to treat his drug and alcohol issues. Santiago will spend at least 30 days at the center.
“This is the best thing that Joey could have done, and we’re very proud that he’s taken this step,” Pixies drummer David Lovering said in a statement. “We ask all of our fans to support Joey while he’s on this road to recovery.”
Because of his rehab stay, Santiago will miss out on promotional duties for Pixies’ new album Head Carrier, due out September 30th. The band was scheduled to perform on the September 26th episode of Conan in support of their new LP along with radio station sessions in New York and Los Angeles the week of the album’s release. All of those promotional appearances have been canceled while Santiago undergoes treatment.
While the guitarist’s time at the center is indefinite – it’s at least 30 days, but could be longer – the band do not anticipate any postponements for their European tour this November and December.
