Pharrell: Daft Punk ‘Not Bound by Time and Space’

Producer talks about working on ‘Random Access Memories’

Pharrell Williams is one of many collaborators on Daft Punk‘s upcoming album, Random Access Memories, and the producer says the French dance duo are “not bound by time and space.” In this installment of Vice and Intel’s Creators Project series for Random Access Memories, Pharrell dove into what it’s like to work with Daft Punk. “The robots’ music is the power to separate itself from all else that exists,” Pharrell said.

Pharrell related a story of running into Daft Punk at one of Madonna‘s parties, where he told the duo that he would work with them in any capacity. “If you just want me to play a tambourine, I’ll do it,” he said. Pharrell and Daft Punk eventually met up in Paris, and Pharrell played some material he was working on, comparing it to Nile Rodgers. Soon enough, Pharrell was working on a track featuring Rodgers himself. “It’s crazy because, you know, on two sides of the Atlantic, we were both, like, at the same place,” Pharrell said. “Let’s go back to that magical time where music and the liveliness of music is what moved people.”

Pharrell also touched on hearing the music after returning home, singing on the track “Get Lucky,” and the inspirations behind the song. There are also glimpses of the track’s music video, featuring Daft Punk on drum and bass, Rodgers on guitar and Pharrell as the frontman. “Somewhere outside of the ether that we exist in is a multitude of realms of possibility and alternate directions,” Pharrell said. “I think they just went in those libraries and just dusted off those things.”

Random Access Memories is out May 21st.
