Pearl Jam and Neil Young Perform ‘Rocking in the Free World’

They play ‘Rocking in the Free World’

Neil Young was one of Pearl Jam‘s few close friends to not make it to their Wisconsin festival last week, but he made up for that absence last night by joining them for “Rockin’ In The Free World” last night at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. (Sorry for the quality of the video. It’s the best one currently on YouTube). Young was in town for the premiere of his new Jonathan Demme-directed concert film Neil Young Journeys at the Toronto Film Festival, where the new documentary Pearl Jam Twenty also premiered over the weekend.

Young is slated to perform at the annual Bridge School Benefit late next month, but his plans beyond that are unclear. He recently delayed Buffalo Springfield’s upcoming reunion tour. “Neil started a book,” Stephen Stills said on a recent radio interview. “He said, ‘Don’t mess with the man, man.'” That only raises more questions. What sort of book is Young writing? He couldn’t tour with Buffalo Springfield as he worked on the book? When is the second volume of his Archives box set coming out? Why hasn’t he toured with Crazy Horse in seven years? As usual with Neil Young, there are many more questions than answers.
