Since hitting the music scene at age 12, Mike Kinsella has been a recognizable force in the indie scene as a member of bands including Cap’n Jazz, Owl and Their/They’re/There, and also as a successful solo artist under the name Owen. Kinsella began performing as Owen in 2001, playing guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. His latest album, L’Ami du Peuple, weaves in a new element of electronica and harder rock.

Now, get an exclusive listen to “Blues to Black,” the first song from the album. It shows Kinsella’s new approach in a mix of smooth vocals, a lightly strummed acoustic guitar and a magical-sounding xylophone over a driving rhythm.

“In the past, I’ve stifled a bunch of my influences and leaned on a couple consistently, but this time I just let each song happen as I heard them and had a lot of fun trying some new things,” he tells Rolling Stone.

L’Ami du Peuple will be released on July 2nd on Polyvinyl Records.
