Other Music, one of New York City’s best and most enduring independent record shops, is about to open its own record label. Other Music Recording Co. will be an imprint of Fat Possum, the label behind Yuck, Spiritualized, the Walkmen, Tennis and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, to focus on underground music from New York and reissues of albums by foreign artists. The store has specialized in imports and local underground music since the early Nineties.

“It’s just something we have wanted to do for a long time,” Other Music co-owner Josh Madell told the New York Times. “Despite everything happening in the music industry, we are always getting excited about new bands.” According to Madell, Fat Possum will take care of the nuts and bolts of releasing records, such as handling distribution, while Other Music will focus on A&R and curation.

Other Music’s first releases with Fat Possum will be a 7-inch single by the Brooklyn band Ex-Cops and a reissue of the debut solo album by Shintaro Sakamoto, the former frontman of the Japanese band Yura Yura Teikoku.
