On the Charts: Alabama Shakes Ride ‘Sound & Color’ to Number One

Alabama Shakes scored their first Number One album on the Billboard 200 as their new LP Sound & Color locked up the top spot in its debut week. The band’s second album, which took advantage of an industry-wide slow sales week, sold 96,000 total albums in finishing atop the charts. Alabama Shakes’ 2012 LP Boys & Girls peaked at Number Six, Billboard reports. Sound & Color was also ATO Records’ first Number One album since they distributed Radiohead’s In Rainbows in January 2008.

The Furious 7 soundtrack spent a second consecutive week at Number Two with another 62,000 in total sales. However, because of Billboard’s new metric where individual single sales contribute toward Track Equivalent Albums (TEAs, for short), the majority of Furious 7‘s album sales come directly from a la carte downloads of the soundtrack’s chart-topping single, Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again.”

Similarly, the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack finished the week at Number Five, up from last week’s Six, even though the film is far removed from movie theaters by now. It’s not the soundtrack on a whole that’s keeping it in the Top 10; instead, the Weeknd’s breakout Fifty Shades single “Earned It” is carrying the entire soundtrack on the Billboard 200.

Besides Sound & Color, only one more debut entered the Top 10: Yelawolf’s Love Story, which finished the week at Number Three with 58,000 in total sales. After nearly falling out of the Top 10 last week, Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late soared from 10 to Four thanks to the just-released physical version of the rapper’s retail mixtape.

Meanwhile, last week’s charts champ quickly became yesterday’s news as Vine star Shawn Mendes plummeted from Number One to Number 17 as sales of his Handwritten shriveled by 83 percent.
