Adele‘s 25 continued its Billboard 200 dominance as the singer’s new album breezed past the 5 million mark after just three weeks of release. 25 sold another 728,000 total copies to attain five-time platinum status and easily rope in a third straight week at Number One. With a 3 million-selling week, a million-selling week and now a 728,000-selling week under its belt, 25 became the first album since the Beatles’ 1 and the Backstreet Boys’ Black & Blue in January 2001 to sell in excess of 650,000 copies in three consecutive weeks, Billboard reports.
Coldplay‘s A Head Full of Dreams debuted at Number Two with 210,000 total copies sold. Chris Martin and company were a long shot to usurp 25 from its throne, and thus Coldplay’s streak of four consecutive Number One studio albums came to an end: The last Coldplay album that didn’t debut in the top spot was 2002’s A Rush of Blood to the Head, which entered the Billboard 200 at Number Five.
Justin Bieber’s Purpose claimed Number Three followed by Pentatonix’s That’s Christmas to Me at Four. In a battle of two rappers dropping new albums last week, Oakland’s own G-Eazy comfortably outsold Rick Ross as When It’s Dark Out moved 132,000 copies to snag Number Five. The prolific Ross’ latest, Black Market, sold 69,000 to settle in at Number Six; by comparison, 2014’s Hood Billionaire – the second of two LPs the rapper released last year – debuted at Number Two.
YouTube star Troye Sivan’s Blue Neighbourhood entered the charts at Number Seven and 65,000 in sales. The rest of the Top 10 was adorned with some of 2015’s heavy hitters: One Direction’s Made in the A.M. (Number Eight), Chris Stapleton’s Traveller (Nine) and the Weeknd’s Album of the Year-nominated Beauty Behind the Madness (Ten).
Adele should hold her perch another week as her main competition this week comes from R. Kelly’s The Buffet and Prince’s surprise LP Hit N Run: Phase Two. Come Friday, 25 will need to fend off new releases from Chris Brown, Pusha T and Cage the Elephant if it hopes to go into 2016 at Number One, though Adele’s upcoming NBC special should help boost sales.
