A native of New Hampshire, Okkervil River mastermind Will Sheff figures if you ever think about his home state, images of white picket fences and quaint villages pop into your head; or worse, you just lump it in with Vermont.
On Okkervil River’s latest record, The Silver Gymnasium (released last month on ATO), Sheff wanted to show the side of New Hampshire he grew up with, one he and director Sean Dunne tried to capture in the new video for “Stay Young.”. The clip pairs Sheff’s youthful, horn-laced folk anthem with fitting footage of kids zooming across frozen lakes on snowmobiles and tearing up fields on motorcycles and ATVs (watch out for a particularly adorable pitbull).
“Four-wheelers and snowmobiles were the coolest things going for NH young people when I was a kid, and I thought it would be fun to make a video that was just this total four-wheeler and ATV fantasia,” Sheff told Rolling Stone. “The ‘Stay Young’ video was shot in Claremont, New Hampshire, two towns to the south of where I grew up, and incidentally the town where I rented my first musical instrument, a saxophone.”
