“She Ain’t Speakin’ Now,” a track off Of Montreal’s upcoming album Lousy With Sylvianbriar, is a new study in contrasts for the Georgia-based indie group. It opens with quiet, late 1960s-style vocals backed by acoustic guitar and a melody that calls back to the Carpenter’s “Top of the World.” About a minute in, the band ditches this soft sound for louder hard rock vocals and fast guitar. The track jumps back and forth between these two sounds as though separate songs have been spliced together, but with an even hand.

“I wrote the song when both my wife and daughter were bedridden with a terrible illness,” Barnes tells Rolling Stone. “It was during the middle of our recording sessions for Sylvianbriar, so I was pretty paranoid about catching what they had. I would sort of hold my breath whenever I was near them. I wrote the song while fearing the worst. Fortunately, they both recovered.”

Lousy With Sylvianbriar is set for release October 8th on Polyvinyl Records. Of Montreal have announced a U.S. fall tour that starts in their hometown of Athens, Georgia. See below for the dates.
