Neil Finn Recruits Wilco, Radiohead Members For 7 Worlds Collide
Eight years after the first 7 Worlds Collide project, Crowded House’s Neil Finn is bringing back his all-star band — which includes the Smiths’ Johnny Marr, Radiohead’s Phil Selway and Ed O’Brien and new additions Wilco — for a new double-disc collection called The Sun Came Out, due out September 29th. Proceeds from the album will benefit Oxfam.
The album was recorded over a three-week stretch in New Zealand around Christmas 2008 with KT Tunstall, who interrupted her honeymoon to partake in the album, Neil’s brother Tim and son Liam (who recently opened for Eddie Vedder, a 7 Worlds Collide alum from 2001), Lisa Germano, Soul Coughing bassist Sebastian Steinberg and Augie March guitarist Glenn Richards all contributing to the sessions. The album finds each member of the supergroup penning at least one track, and gives fans of Radiohead an opportunity to hear drummer Selway sing on a pair of tunes called “The Witching Hour” and “The Tie That Binds Us,” where Selway plays acoustic guitar and Wilco serves as his backing band.
Ed O’Brien, who always does a great job singing behind Thom Yorke when Radiohead plays live, splits lead vocals with Neil Finn on “Bodhisattva Blues.” In addition to a Tweedy/Marr-written collaboration called “Too Blue,” Tweedy performs his recent Wilco (The Album) standout “You Never Know” with the 7 Worlds Collide band, and sings on Disc 1 closer “What Could Have Been.” Still, the central figure here is Neil Finn, who features on most tracks and produced the disc with Jim Scott. “It’s Neil. It all comes from him. There’s something about him that made everyone open up creatively,” Tunstall said of Finn.
