Minnesota Twins Pay Tribute to Prince With Purple-Lit Stadium
As the world mourns the death of Prince, the sports teams in his hometown of Minneapolis are also paying tribute – a testament to an artist who transcended the boundaries of music.
Though the Minnesota Twins are currently on the road in Milwaukee, the team lit an empty Target Field in purple, and displayed an image of him on the Jumbotron that read, “Goodnight Sweet Prince.” The Twins also posted the image of Prince on Twitter, writing, “Fitting that it’s raining in Minneapolis today.”
According to TMZ, a rep for the team said they are also considering ways to honor Prince at the next home game. “I’m sure [it] will include a lot of Prince music. I don’t know if it’ll happen, but we’re talking about instead of a moment of silence, having a moment of sexy.”

Meanwhile, the NHL’s Minnesota Wild – in the thick of a playoff battle with the Dallas Stars – posted a shot from outside their Xcel Energy Center that touted Prince’s run of sold-out shows at the arena in 2004, and wrote “Rest in peace to the iconic Minnesota musician, one we were proud to call our own.”
Glen Taylor, owner of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx, released a statement that remembered Prince as “a local icon, legend and musical innovator,” and the Timberwolves also paid tribute, writing “When doves cry, Wolves cry #RIPPrince”.

Finally, the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings released a statement that called him “an incredible representative of Minnesota…he was a brilliant performer and a better person. We will forever be proud and grateful that he considered himself a Vikings fan.”
