Mike Ness of Social Distortion Goes antiquing, talks family

During downtime at this year’s Austin City Limits festival, Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness took the opportunity to cruise South Austin where he enjoys shopping at quirky antique and oddity stores, including the famed Off the Wall. While shopping for mantlepieces and miscellanea, Ness conceded that there’s a reason it takes Social Distortion so long between albums – they all have lives outside the band. For him, that means family. But the one feeds the other, as life inspires art.

“It’s been – and still continues to be – a very poignant spot in my life right now,” he tells Rolling Stone. Raising his kids has been transformative if not always easy. “It’s like looking in a mirror,” he says. “That’s fucking painful sometimes. And we had to climb a couple mountains to get to this point – the whole family.”

But, as he discusses in this video interview, it’s only led to higher ground…and a lot of fertile songwriting sessions along the way.
