Mick Jagger, Martin Scorsese Enlist Olivia Wilde for 1970s HBO Show

Actress Olivia Wilde has signed on as one of the main roles in the music-focused drama series that Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese have been working on for HBO in recent years. Although the as-yet-untitled show has not gotten the green light from the network, according to Deadline, the producers are gearing up to work on its hour-long pilot, written by Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire) and Breaking Bad producer George Mastras, this summer with Scorsese in the director’s chair. Wilde, who was recently in Her, Rush and Tron: Legacy, will portray the wife of the lead role, played by Bobby Cannavale (Blue Jasmine, Boardwalk Empire), a down-on-his-luck record exec in search of a new sound.

The series is set in New York City in the late Seventies, just as punk and disco was beginning to take form. Cannavale’s character, Richie Finestra, is caught in the middle of the changing times in what Deadline describes as “the drug- and sex-fueled music business” as he tries to rejuvenate his label with some fresh blood. Faced with a life-altering decision, Finestra suffers a crisis of character.

Wilde’s character, Devon Finestra, is a former actress and model who survived the boho Sixties in New York. After her husband’s midlife crisis puts a strain on their family, she returns to her previous lifestyle.

Jagger conceived the show originally as a feature film, and the TV version of the story has been in the works since 2010. The series will be Wilde’s first longtime commitment to TV since she broke out on House.

The Rolling Stones frontman is also developing a TV show based on the Oscar-winning music doc 20 Feet From Stardom. He also has a Broadway musical adaptation of the same doc in the works.

Jagger and Scorsese previously collaborated on the concert film Shine a Light, which came out in 2008. Scorsese told Rolling Stone at the time about the first time he heard the Stones. “It was 1965,” he said. “I was driving on the Long Island Expressway in a Volkswagen, and suddenly out of this mono speaker came the opening guitar licks of Keith Richards and ‘Satisfaction.’ And the impression of Mick Jagger’s voice, then the lyrics and the driving, relentless nature of the song. It’s like a motor. I had to go back and find their other music.”
