Michelle Shocked Tells Piers Morgan: ‘I’m Not Homophobic’

‘I didn’t know what I was talking about,’ singer says on CNN

Folk singer Michelle Shocked insisted she’s not homophobic during an appearance last night on Piers Morgan Live. The singer, who drew criticism last month for disparaging comments she made about gay marriage while performing in San Francisco, said she made a mistake and regretted the incident. (More of the interview appears on Gawker.)

Shocked gave roundabout, rambling answers to Morgan’s questions until finally she said, “If you want to keep this simple for the audience, let me give you a straight: No, I am not homophobic.”

The singer said she was caught up in the moment onstage and was trying to draw a distinction for the audience between “reality” and “truth” with regard to California’s Proposition 8 measure banning gay marriage, though she acknowledged, “I didn’t know what I was talking about.”

Shocked, who in the past few years has become a born-again Christian, also addressed the gay community directly, saying, “In no way do I disavow the LGBT community in the same way I don’t disavow my faith community,” adding she’s in full support of gay marriage.
