Michael Stipe Discusses Making ‘Collapse Into Now’ at Rehearsal for Tibet House Benefit Concert

‘The three of us were communicating in a really great way,’ Stipe tells Rolling Stone

Michael Stipe, the Roots, the Flaming Lips, Taj Mahal and Patti Smith are among the performers who will take the stage tonight for the 21st annual Tibet House Benefit Concert at Carnegie Hall. The show is known for unlikely collaborations; this year will likely see the Flaming Lips jam with Phillip Glass and Patti Smith sing with Michael Stipe.

Review: R.E.M.’s Collapse Into Now

Rolling Stone was on hand at rehearsals yesterday and spoke to Stipe, Taj Mahal (joined by his daughter) and the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne. “On Collapse Into Now, the three of us were communicating in a really great way,” Stipe says. Then Coyne tells Rolling Stone about the time he smoked pot backstage with Paul McCartney.

Plus, watch the Flaming Lips rehearse “Feeling Yourself Disintegrate,” off 1999’s The Soft Bulletin and a trippy version of “Do You Realize?”
