Mexican ‘Voice’ Singer Shot and Killed in Chicago

Alejandro “Jano” Fuentes dies two days after being shot multiple times in attempted carjacking

Alejandro “Jano” Fuentes, a singer who appeared on the Mexican version of The Voice in 2011, died Saturday after being shot multiple times in his car Thursday in Chicago. He was 45.

Fuentes’ death comes nearly a week after the murder of Voice contestant Christina Grimmie. While that singer was killed by a deranged fan, initial reports indicate that Fuentes was slain following an attempted carjacking.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Fuentes had just celebrated his 45th birthday with friends when he went back to his car on the 4300 block of South Archer Avenue. After entering his vehicle, someone approached Fuentes, showed him a firearm and demanded the singer exit the car. When Fuentes refused, he was shot three times in the head, ABC News reports.

The suspect fled in a waiting vehicle; no arrests have been made in Fuentes’ death.

Fuentes’ friends and family held a memorial and vigil for the Chicago native at his performing arts studio Saturday night. “He was a very talented guy — one of a kind,” friend Miguel Sanchez told the Chicago Tribune. That’s why it’s terrible for us, because he didn’t have any enemies, he didn’t have a problem with nobody. He was a gentleman.”

Mexican singer Lucero, Fuentes’ coach on the 2011 season of La Voz, remembered the contestant on her Twitter.
