Metric Mull ‘Fortunes’ on Foreboding, Futuristic New Single

Latest ‘Pagans In Vegas’ track inspired by “searching for the community or the culture or the scene that you’re part of,” says Emily Haines

Metric have released another spacey, stirring, synth-soaked new track, “Fortunes,” from their upcoming LP, Pagans In Vegas.

The song, which premiered on Entertainment Weekly, begins with Emily Haines crooning over punchy percussion and an ominous piano progression, both of which are intermittently sliced by a sickly, eerie synth line. It all builds, however, to a serene chorus — big drums, warm acoustic guitars that echo into space — and these two components continue to push and pull at each other throughout the track.

Haines told EW she wrote “Fortunes” while watching many of her friends leave New York City for Los Angeles. Remaining in NYC led her to consider her own place in the city, as well as her uncertainty about whether this chapter in her life was actually over.

“I found writing it was from a place of anxiety, and the sense that it was too late to leave and searching for the community or the culture or the scene that you’re part of wherever you live,” Haines said. “Is it finite? Is it over and you didn’t notice? Is it there and you’re not in it?”

“Fortunes” follows previously released Pagans In Vegas cuts “The Shade,” “Cascades” and “Too Bad, So Sad.” The group also recently offered a new video for “The Shade,” which melds footage of the band performing on a rooftop with nature scenes, clips of riot police and a trash heap piled with relics of the Internet age.

Pagans In Vegas, due out September 18th, marks Metric’s sixth LP and follows up 2012’s Synthetica. The group is scheduled to play the Made In America Festival in Philadelphia over Labor Day weekend, with a set at the Life is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas to follow a week after Pagans In Vegas arrives.
