Mel C. Drops More Spice Girls Breakup Hints

Sporty Spice says group’s future is unsure

Spice Girl Mel C. added fuel to the Spice Girls breakup controversy, when she appeared on a chat show on British television on Monday. During her appearance on ITV’s Frank Skinner Show, the often outspoken singer mentioned how much her life has improved since exiting the group, a shock to viewers since there has been no official announcement that the artist still known as “Sporty Spice” had left. “Actually, I have been luckier since I left — well, since I’ve been doing my own thing,” the singer corrected, before quickly adding, “Oh, I’m glad you didn’t pick up on that one.”

But there was no putting the cat back in the bag after Chisholm’s very public faux pas, and the Britain’s media seized on her remarks, in addition to her later complaints that she felt restricted by being a Spice Girl. “When I’m with Spice, it’s like I’ve got a lot more to consider,” she said. “We have a lot of very young fans and other girls. I don’t want upset them or say anything that could reflect on them, but now I just find it really hard to keep it all in.”

The admission comes on the heels of the band’s appearance on the MTV Europe Awards last week, when Chisholm reportedly had a minor temper tantrum during the dress rehearsals in which she threw her mike down and stormed off the stage. Later, during the awards, Mel C. told British reporters, “We are not really sure about our future at the moment. We all enjoy our Spice work but we are having a really hard time at the moment . . . If we get more fulfillment from our solo careers, then that’s what we will do.”

A spokesperson for the band insists that Mel C. has not left that band and had nothing more to add.

Last month the Spice Girls became the first female group to rack up nine British No. 1 singles, but their success was tempered by disappointment when their latest album, Forever, was kept off the top of the British album chart by boy band Westlife.
