Maynard James Keenan will help ease the wait for a new Tool album with an authorized biography set to publish in fall 2016. A rep for the singer confirmed the tome to Rolling Stone, adding that the memoir will be penned by author Sarah Jensen with Keenan’s full cooperation. Backbeat Books will release the biography.
“The agreement with Backbeat Books is a reality, and the biography of Maynard Keenan is slated for publication next fall,” Jensen said in a note to Tool fans (via Blabbermouth). “Lots of work still to be done, but today’s priority: feeling grateful to everybody who’s been there for us throughout this project. That means you!”
In addition to the authorized biography and the upcoming Tool LP that is “progressing slowly, nicely,” Keenan will next release Money Shot, the third LP from his Puscifer project. While still touting that group’s sense of humor, Money Shot finds Keenan tackling serious issues like climate change, education and the state of the human race.
“I feel there’s a lot of disconnect,” Keenan told Rolling Stone. “We’ve kind of gotten away from the nuclear family — the ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ mentality. You see local food movements, ‘local first’ movements, farm-to-table movements, and all those kind of things. But no one’s really going farm-to-table with family, anymore; they don’t understand what it really takes to raise a child. A little bit of discipline, maybe, so when you open your mouth and say something that’s not cool to an adult, maybe you get smacked in the teeth.”
As for progress on the new Tool album, Keenan told Rolling Stone, “I write lyrics and melodies to music. If I don’t have music, I can’t.”
