Mayer Hawthorne Ends Video Trilogy With Yearning ‘Get You Back’
Mayer Hawthorne has released the final installment of his three-part video series where he plays a detective in a film noir setting. The mystery unfolds with first chapter “Cosmic Love” followed by “Love Like That,” and concludes with the video for “Get You Back.” The songs hail from his fourth full-length album, Man About Town.
The final clip finds Hawthorne in a pensive mood, reflecting on a love lost, with flashbacks of his female protagonist in a steamy shower and then a scene that harkens back to the second installment, which ended with a gun pointed at him by his paramour. It turns out the gun scene was a playful game between the lovers.
“When you spoke, you were throwing those words at me / I didn’t even understand what I did wrong / I got on a plane to Miami / And when I got back you were gone,” he laments in the yearning ballad.
While the mystery plays out with Hawthorne’s character being attacked and his lover being arrested, the detective story line doesn’t wrap up neatly in a Hollywood way. Instead, the tale seems more about the symbolic detective work it might take to navigate a complicated relationship, from early crush (“Cosmic Love”) to longing for an enduring bond (“Love Like That”), and on through the disillusionment that follows a love gone wrong and the desire to make it last with “Get You Back.”
Hawthorne embarks on a tour, which features five dates with Hall & Oates, beginning May 4th in Santa Ana, CA, at the Observatory. His 28-date North American stint wraps on July 8th at Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.
