Magic Man Find a Dark Twisted Fantasy in ‘Paris’ – Video Premiere

Boston crew go heavy on surrealism in new clip from ‘You Are Here’ EP

Boston group Magic Man’s vision of “Paris” involves headless bodies and heavy surrealism.  The track, which is off their You Are Here EP, finds the band blending synth-pop with modern rock. Referencing the electric-meets-electronic sound of the Postal Service, vocalist Alex Caplow uses a breathy, delicate tone while synth-layers hum and rumble in the background. The whole song experiments in dynamics, switching between the quiet clinking of a keyboard before erupting into a soaring, stadium-sized chorus. The swirling layers of synths, which constantly rush behind Caplow’s vaporous voice, give the whole track a hazy vibe.

Video director Mimi Cave wanted to expand upon that haziness for the video. As Caplow stands in the middle of a forest, Dali-like images flash across the screen, including headless dancers, bodies literally wrung around metal bars and people growing into trees. “Having never shot a music video before, we didn’t know what to expect,” Caplow told Rolling Stone. “We were big fans of Mimi’s work, and it was exciting to work with another artist we really respect — she definitely captured the mixture of reality and fantasy that ‘Paris’ is all about.”

You Are Here is out now, and band is on tour, so they might be where you are.
