In response to protests in Poland, Madonna displayed World War II-era footage of the Warsaw Uprising against the Nazis at her August 1st show in Warsaw, reports the New York Times. With her MDNA tour stop in the country landing on the anniversary of the 1944 uprising, Madonna was met with opposition from the Youth Crusade, a Roman Catholic group, which produced over 50,000 signatures in a petition to stop the show.
The Youth Crusade also claimed Madonna was promoting homosexuality, pornography and “attacking the Catholic faith.”
Much of the audience applauded the two-and-a-half minute clip. Last month, the France’s far-right National Front party announced they were filing a lawsuit against Madonna over her use of Nazi imagery. The singer also canceled the 2013 Australian leg of her MDNA tour, and just last week, fans in Paris booed and called Madonna a “slut” after she played a short 45-minute set in an unexpected show.
