M.I.A. and fashion giant H&M are seeking 1,000 tons of unwanted clothes to be recycled and turned into new garments as a way to raise awareness of World Recycle Week, taking place April 18th through 24th.
As part of their efforts, M.I.A. is also prepping a new music video that will focus on the environmental impact of clothes sitting in landfills around the world. The video is set to arrive via H&M’s website on April 11th.
H&M has also tapped a handful of performers appearing in the M.I.A. video and bloggers to show off the duds they’ll be recycling in “rehaul videos” — a spin on the popular “haul videos,” in which posters unpack and detail their latest purchases.
Those wishing to recycle their unwanted clothes can bring them — regardless of brand or condition — to an H&M store, where they’ll receive a store voucher in return. The clothing will then be broken down and used to create textile fibers for new clothes. H&M has been recycling used clothes since 2013; more information on garment waste and collecting is available on their website.
As for M.I.A., it’s unclear whether her video for H&M and World Recycle Week will feature an old song or a potential cut from her upcoming album, Matahdatah. The musician began teasing the follow-up to 2013’s Matangi last year, releasing a handful of new songs including “Swords” and “Borders,” the latter of which was given a poignant clip that examined the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis. M.I.A. has yet to announce a release date for Matahdatah.
