How Do Musicians Make Money off YouTube?
Celebrating YouTube’s rise to what it calls “the world’s go-to music destination,” the nominees for the YouTube Music Awards were announced back on October 17th. Highlighting videos that had been watched and shared the most over the past year, big names like Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, One Direction, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and Taylor Swift filled up categories like Artist of the Year and Video of the Year.
More indie leaning artists, like Atoms for Peace, Toro Y Moi and Bat for Lashes scored nods in the Innovation of the Year category, while marquee names like Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will compete against bourgeoning ones such a Naughty Boy, Passenger and Rudimental for Youtube Breakthrough. The site’s slightly wackier, more user-driven side will be honored in the Response of the Year and YouTube Phenomenon categories, the latter recognizing the likes of Psy’s “Gangnam Style” and Baauer’s “Harlem Shake.”
Winners for the YouTube Music Awards will be fan-picked, and you can check out a full list of nominees here; votes for each category are cast by sharing specific clips on various social media platforms.
