Local Natives Debut Yearning Single ‘Past Lives’

Local Natives expand into stadium-sized rock with new single “Past Lives,” their first material since their 2013 LP Hummingbird. The indie-rock quintet blends acoustic and programmed drums with throbbing synth pads and rich vocal harmonies, pleading, “Save me from the prime of my life / I’ll try to carry you home tonight.”
“Past Lives” is available to stream via Soundcloud and the group’s website. The band performed the track onstage last year, with the song featured in a March episode of the Netflix series Flaked.
“The world is not static, it’s made new over and over again,” band member Taylor Rice said of the song in a statement. “But we tend to live the same patterns in a loop, loving the same way, wrestling the same demons, the same dynamics playing out around us again and again. Untangling every moment and decision that led us to where we are now can make fate feel concrete, inescapable. But our world is not fixed, it’s constantly reemerging, and we can change it into whatever we want.”
Local Natives performed Thursday night at a San Francisco pop-up show. They’ve scheduled a handful of concerts for this summer and fall, including stops at Lollapalooza and the End of the Road Festival.
