‘Lip Sync Battle’ Schedules Free Live Show in Central Park

Spike’s breakout series Lip Sync Battle — a spin-off of Jimmy Fallon’s beloved Tonight Show bit — will host a free live show on July 13th in New York City as part of Summerstage, the annual concert series held in Central Park, Vulture reports.
Host LL Cool J and commentator Chrissy Teigen will lead the proceedings, though celebrity contestants have yet to be announced. According to executive producer Casey Patterson, LSB live will operate similarly to the television show, but with some changes to accommodate the nature of the venue.
“It’ll be like two editions of our show, back-to-back,” Patterson told Vulture. “There will be four performers and they’ll probably do two songs each. It’s similar to [the TV show], but blown up a bit. We have a big stage we have to fill.”
While Patterson called LSB live “a big thank you to the fans,” it’s also a pilot run for possible future live events. “We’re very interested in seeing [the format] live and seeing what it would look like in a festival model,” Patterson said. “This is a great way for us to test the waters for that. I think it’s really going to soar in this environment.”
The Central Park show, however, will neither be broadcast on TV or streamed live online, with Patterson saying, “We wanted to take full advantage of being able to do a show live without the pressures of TV.” For those who can’t make the free show, Spike and LSB‘s producers are reportedly working with ABC’s Good Morning America to stage a special performance the morning of the Summerstage show.
The second half of Lip Sync Battle‘s first season is set to begin airing on July 9th, though producers have already started pre-production for Season Two. As of now, the show will remain a half-hour affair, though Patterson said it’s possible they’ll start incorporating live events, or more hour-long specials, like the season finale with the cast of Empire.
