Lil Wayne isn’t letting a one-year prison sentence in a maximum-security state pen prevent him from keeping in contact with his fans: Weezy and his Young Money team launched a new website called Weezy Thanx You today. It’s an online venue where Tha Carter 3 rapper can respond to his fan letters and give updates from behind bars. “During my prison stint, I want my fans to know I love you,” Lil Wayne writes on the site. “I want all of you to know that I appreciate all the mail I get, and this is my way of saying thank you.” Wayne’s last communication on his Twitter came March 8th as he left for jail: “Law is mind without reason. ……………..I’ll return.”
As Rolling Stone reported earlier this month, Lil Wayne was sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to weapons charges stemming from a 2007 incident in New York. Lil Wayne’s first letter to fans, cleverly titled “Gone ’til November,” reads more like a string of fortune cookies than Shawshank Redemption. It features introspective little adages like, “The more time you spend contemplating what you should have done… you lose valuable time planning what you can and will do” and “Hate is only a form love that hasn’t found a way to express itself logically.” Lil Wayne also thanks his fans for supporting him through this trying time, for sending him so many letters and for helping Rebirth go gold even though “critics aborted it.”
Although incarcerated, Lil Wayne — an avid, borderline obsessive sports fan — says he will continue blogging for ESPN.com. In addition to writing, Weezy tells fans, “I work out a lot because it helps pass the time. I read the Bible everyday. Jail didn’t make me find God, He’s always been there. They can lock me up, but my spirit and my love can never be confined to prison walls.” Wayne promises he’ll try to update Weezy Thanx You once a week, responding to as many fan letters as possible. The new site also has a countdown clock ticking away until Lil Wayne’s sentence ends. At press time, and given good behavior, we’re 215 days and eight hours away from a free Weezy.
