Lil Wayne Busted for Contraband at Rikers Island

Rapper caught with headphones and iPod charger while serving one-year sentence on gun charges

Before Lil Wayne went to prison in March, the rapper told Rolling Stone in order to keep his craft sharp behind bars, “I’ll have an iPod, and I’ll make sure they keep sending me beats.” Turns out, that’s a violation of Rikers Island policy. Weezy was charged with the infraction of possession of contraband — in this case, “unauthorized” headphones and an iPod charger — yesterday, the New York Daily News reports. While a search of Weezy’s cell yielded no iPod, the device was found in another inmate’s cell. Wayne reportedly was hiding the headphones and charger in a snack bag in a garbage can, which seems to suggest he knew that he shouldn’t have the illegal contraband.

According to the Village Voice , the iPod, while seemingly innocent, represents a much larger problem: Inmates are prohibited from using electronics that aren’t sanctioned by the prison’s commissary, which does provide headphones and an AM/FM radio. That means someone must have smuggled in the iPod from the outside, which prison officials are now investigating. The New York Daily News adds that Wayne’s cell was searched at 8 a.m. yesterday morning after “a prison rat tipped off officers” about the rapper’s electronic goods. No word yet whether this will affect Wayne’s sentence, which is due to end in 175 days, according to Weezy Thanx You, pending good behavior.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, Lil Wayne began a yearlong prison sentence at New York’s Rikers Island in March after pleading guilty to weapons charges stemming from a July 2007 arrest.
