The song harkens back to the early, glory days of the New Orleans label, with snappy, gated snare hits and dripping synths over which Juvenile, Weezy and Mannie Fresh trade savage, but sporadically goofy, lines (“Mixing Cristal and Ciroc,” Wayne spits, “I need a name for it / Call it Chris Rock”).
As for Birdman, the Cash Money honcho only appears during the intro and outro of “Hate,” making the song less of a reunion between him and Lil Wayne – they remain embroiled in a legal battle — but another step in their détente (Juvenile has also had legal issues with Cash Money). In a statement, however, Mannie Fresh suggested there would be future collaborations that featured all three.
“I’ve always been the liaison between these guys. They took my word and put their trust in me in bringing everyone together for this hot track,” Mannie said. “You definitely can expect more from this project.”
Though Lil Wayne and Birdman seemed to reconcile at a Miami nightclub in January, the rapper is reportedly still suing Cash Money over the delayed release of Tha Carter V. Last year, after Wayne filed his $51 million suit, Birdman and Cash Money sued Jay Z and Tidal over the release of The Free Weezy Album. The dispute was further marred by an attempted shooting at Weezy by Jimmy Carlton Winfrey, an associate of Birdman and Young Thug, who pleaded guilty last November (neither Young Thug nor Baby were charged, but both were named in an indictment).
