LCD Soundsystem Announce Final Concert

LCD Soundsystem have announced that they will perform their final concert at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan on April 2nd. In a statement released on their website, band leader James Murphy promised a three-hour show featuring all their setlist staples plus some material they have never played live. Murphy also requested that all people attending the show arrive wearing all black, all white, or black and white. New York City punk funk legends Liquid Liquid are scheduled as the opening act.

News of LCD Soundsystem’s imminent retirement shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has read any of the band’s press in the past year. Since their most recent album This Is Happening was released in May, Murphy has made it very clear that he wanted to stop performing live after the group finished promoting the record. Also, a large chunk of the lyrics on This Is Happening are about the ways in which nonstop touring has damaged Murphy’s personal life.

Though this show at MSG will mark the end of LCD Soundsystem as a live act, it does not mean that Murphy will stop releasing music under that name. In various interviews over the course of last year, Murphy claimed he would still put out singles and other tracks as LCD Soundsystem. Also, in a post concerning the final gig on his label DFA Records’ message board, Murphy was careful to say that they were retiring “as this live band,” which leaves the door open for performances with a different line-up in the future.
