Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui released her debut single “Expectations.” Along with the guitar-driven song comes a dramatic, black-and-white music video. Jauregui teamed up with Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles, Jessie Ware) for the slow-burning, guitar-heavy track. Hitting the deeper end of her range, she reflects on why she should “have no expectations” for her unfaithful partner.
In the black-and-white visual, two versions of Jauregui roam an empty house. One wears a white dress and is often surrounded by nature and sunlight while the black leather-clad “darker” Jauregui is seen in the shadows of the home. They eventually confront one another, and the “darker” version does a sultry dance routine for the more “innocent” Jauregui during the song’s guitar solo.
“When everything was Fifth wrapped up, that’s really when the floodgate of inspo’ really took hold,” she told Rolling Stone before a phone-free premiere of her video for fans at NYC’s Angelika Film Center. Writing sessions for Jauregui’s forthcoming debut album began in May, just before she went out on tour with Halsey. “Expectations,” which was co-written and produced by Kid Harpoon, came out of those early sessions.
“It’s really, for me, the perfect piece to come out first, just in my connection to it and in the way I express myself,” she continues. Further cementing the way she wants her solo material to be perceived, Jauregui made sure she featured a female guitarist on the track, enlisting her touring guitarist Liso Lee for the song. “I think that’s major, especially playing electric guitar and really ripping on it. It’s really dope.”
