Lake Street Dive Take a ‘Selfie of the Soul’ in ‘Bad Self Portraits’

Lake Street Dive’s rollicking style has a way of combining the old with the new, and while their new album, Bad Self Portraits, may have a classic sound, the video for its title track covers decidedly modern ground.

“Everyone can relate to a selfie, right?” drummer Michael Calabrese tells Rolling Stone. “This song tries to capture a context that exists ubiquitously in our culture right now. When coupled with the traditional idea of love in song form, it becomes a selfie of the soul; another medium that can be used to share a portrait of yourself with the masses. That’s how we felt the rest of the songs functioned on the record and the reason we gave the album its name.”

The “Bad Self Portraits” video, shot by Greg Liszt, shows footage of the band during the actual recorded takes for the track, and proves just how much energy and precision Lake Street Dive put into their new album’s studio sessions. Watching the individual members record their instruments while hearing the finished product is an impressive experience, topped only by the fact that no one actually utters the word “selfie.”

Bad Self Portraits is out February 18th on Signature Sounds. Lake Street Dive is on tour now.
