Lady Gaga Rallies Against ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’
Lady Gaga spoke at a rally in Portland, Maine today, demanding the state’s two senators vote to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” when the Senate considers the issue tomorrow. Gaga also took aim at John McCain and like-minded politicians for supporting the policy. Dressed in a suit and tie and wearing large eyeglasses, Lady Gaga took the stage a little after 5 p.m. as U2’s “Beautiful Day” played over the loudspeakers at Deering Oaks Park, where a hundreds had gathered to listen to Gaga’s speech.
Gaga began by reciting the Oath of Enlistment, but tacking on the phrase ” … unless, there’s a gay soldier in my unit, sir.” She then went on to compare “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” supporters like McCain to the men who murdered of Matthew Shepard, then claimed homophobia as a defense “Doesn’t it seem to be that ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ is backwards — doesn’t it seem like we’re penalizing the wrong soldier? We should send home the straight soldier who hates the gay soldier,” Gaga said. “I am here today because I would like to propose a new law — a law that sends home the soldier that has the problem. Our new law is called ‘If You Don’t Like It, Go Home…’ It sends home the soldier that fights for some freedoms and some equality, but not for the gays.”

Gaga concluded by naming a trio of undecided senators who could determine whether the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is repealed. “To the Senate, to Americans, to Senator Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, both from Maine, and to Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts, equality is the prime rib of America. Equality is the prime rib of what we stand for as a nation. And I don’t get to enjoy the greatest cut of meat my country has to offer,” Gaga said. “Shouldn’t everyone deserve the right to wear the same meat dress as I do?” Gaga left the stage with chanting a message to all those soldiers who support “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”: “Go Home.”
