After an acclaimed stretch on the film festival circuit, a brief theatrical run and its HBO premiere, Montage of Heck will return to movie theaters this August. Abramorama will distribute the Brett Morgen-directed film at select cinemas starting August 7th. Montage of Heck has already booked engagements at New York’s IFC Center and Los Angeles’ ArcLight, as well as ArcLight Cinemas’ complexes around the country.

Montage of Heck uses never-before-seen home videos, recently unearthed audio recordings and new interviews with Courtney Love, Krist Novoselic and Cobain’s family to paint a fresh portrait of the Nirvana singer. “It sounds like a crazy pitch for a movie. How do you document the inside of someone? And do it in a visceral, kinetic way? That was part of my challenge,” Morgen told Rolling Stone. “What we get in Montage of Heck is all this material where Kurt isn’t performing for anyone. Nothing is being filtered. There are these raw intimate moments that were not intended to be disseminated.”

Although it drew rave reviews from critics and fans alike, not everyone was pleased with Montage of Heck. Last month, Melvins’ Buzz Osborne, a close friend of Cobain’s, slammed the film for being “90 percent bullshit.” “Facts don’t make any difference. What matters is what people believe. The ‘truth’ about [Cobain’s] situation has always been false,” Osborne said. “So there you go. . . utter fabrication. That’s never not been the case.”
