Kiss’ Gene Simmons wants help formulating ideas for how Rolling Stone’s current cover stars should celebrate their 40th anniversary in the “most epic way possible” this year. So he’s put it to the band’s fans, via Tongal, a company that connects brands to fans for crowdsourcing ideas, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“We’ve always been about the fans,” Simmons told THR. “Tongal allows our fans to throw out ideas, and you know you’re going to make something authentic.”
While past Tongal clients include Pringles and Speed Stick, Kiss are starting out in a new Tongal service called Left Field, where fans can contribute ideas in 140-character missives à la Twitter. “‘Deuce’ will be for Left Field what ‘Enter Sandman’ was for Mariano Rivera,” says the Tongal website about why it has launched its new platform with Kiss. Tongal will pay the people who come up with ideas and expects to award $15 million to its community this year.
In other Kiss news, the group has launched a “Kiss Photo Bomb” app, which allows users to add Kiss makeup to their selfies, Kiss members to their photos and Kiss emoticons to their texts. The app is available on iOS and Android devices and even comes with the very Kiss-like endorsement from band cofounders Simmons and Paul Stanley: “We are excited to expand the Kiss experience to our mobile fans. Kiss Photo Bomb will rock the charts with fans around the world!”
Next week, Simmons and Stanley will have ample opportunities to use their app when they are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Although the group has decided not to perform at the induction, following disputes with founding members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, the current lineup has decided to arrive as a band. The current lineup will all sit at the same table with former guitarist Bruce Kulick, who played with the band from 1984 to 1996. “The fact that they want me at their table means the world,” Kulick recently told Rolling Stone.
