Buzz Osborne and his Melvins bandmates love Kiss so much that, in 1992, each member of the sludgy metal trio put out a solo album with art similar to the four solo albums Kiss put out in 1978; Osborne’s even had drips of blood dribbling from his mouth in the same way as Kiss vocalist-bassist Gene Simmons on his cover. But his love for the makeup-wearing rockers only goes so far. When a reporter asked Osborne to weigh in on the fact that current Kiss guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer wear the same makeup and costumes that Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, respectively, debuted 40 years ago, he had some choice words that he’s sticking to.
“I couldn’t care less,” Osborne told Missoula Independent in June. “As far as I can tell, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss are fucked-up alcoholic junkie guys. So I don’t think Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley should let those two fuck-ups ruin them. Why should they? OK, they chose to be alcoholics and fuck-ups, now in doing that they have to face the consequences. Gene Simmons didn’t do it, why should he face the consequences?”
Now, Osborne has expounded on his opinion in a diary post for Noisey. “Apparently pissed-off Kiss heads have been flipping out and calling me every kind of son of a bitch and a lot worse, and, until I saw it online, I didn’t even remember doing it,” the Melvins frontman said. Osborne said he barely remembered the interview and that he couldn’t care less what was going on with Kiss, but he nevertheless refined his stance.
“It took me a while to even figure out exactly what I’d said that pissed off all the Kiss trolls, and, as far as I can tell, they’re mad because I called Ace and Peter alcoholic junkies, like that’s not common knowledge,” he wrote. “Are Kiss fans really stupid enough believe those two never got loaded?…I mean, in two seconds of an Internet search I’d found Gene on YouTube talking all about the two of them getting fucked up all through the Kiss golden years and in fact he even talks about those guys not even playing on tracks of albums like Destroyer because of their fucked-up behavior. In order to get the job done, the sober members of Kiss were forced to hire studio hacks…in the Seventies.”
Osborne also took umbrage with Kiss fans’ attacks on him online. “Apparently I’m a fat, stupid, Sideshow Bob-looking freak that none of them have ever heard of who has no right to talk shit about Ace and Peter,” he wrote. “Ace and Peter, two grown men who made a fortune wearing Kabuki makeup as a result of being even uglier than I am. You know why they wore make up? Because they needed it!”
In April, current Kiss members Simmons and Paul Stanley peacefully reunited onstage with Frehley and Criss for their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Leading up to the ceremony, the current and former members feuded in the press over whether or not they would perform together. Ultimately, each member of the original lineup thanked one another in their acceptance speeches.
