Kings of Leon Documentary to Premiere on Showtime

‘Talihina Sky’ reveals the history of the Followill family

Talihina Sky, a documentary that delves into the family history of the Kings of Leon‘s Followill clan, is set to make its television premiere on Showtime on Sunday, August 21st at 10 p.m. ET. The film, which was directed by Followill family friend Stephen C. Mitchell, includes home video and behind-the-scenes footage of the band, as well as their extended family and their father, a Pentecostal evangelist minister.

The title of the documentary refers to Talihina, Oklahoma, where the Followill family hosts an annual weeklong family reunion. “This is the first year we have to miss it,” drummer and vocalist Nathan Followill told Rolling Stone shortly after a rough cut of the film debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival, noting the band’s extensive summer tour commitments.

Talihina Sky is mostly focused on the band’s genesis, though some crucial footage was not available. “We had filmed every bit of the process,” frontman Caleb Followill says of the band’s early days. “Us in the garage, writing songs, learning E chords and G chords, really good stuff. But we had a rental car, and we left the camcorder in the car, and it was stolen. They stole the most priceless footage. People are going to want to know more about those early days, but we don’t have it.”

Even still, the movie does tell the story of how the Kings embraced rock and roll despite growing up in a religious environment that considered it the devil’s music, and how their minister father came to enjoy the group’s success. “Our dad still enjoys the celebrity of being Leon,” says Nathan. (Leon is their dad’s middle name, if you didn’t know.)
