Kid Rock Plans to Re-Record ‘Devil Without a Cause’
Kid Rock is planning to re-record his breakthrough 1998 album Devil Without a Cause, Billboard reports. The Detroit rocker wants to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the record in August 2013. Rock said part of the reason for doing a new version of the album is so he will own the master recordings, but also wants to aesthetically revisit the album that spawned hits like “Bawitdaba” and “Cowboy.”
“Some of them will be exactly like they were and some of them will have the sensibilities of what we’ve learned playing those songs live for 15 years,” said Rock. “I’m not going to say they’re going to be better than the originals; that’s tough to top. But I think there’s something special about them that people will dig. They’re going to be the way a lot of people have seen us play these versions live. . . . We’ve twisted them up so much to where it’s very interesting, very cool.”
Rock even has hopes that album cut “Wasting Time” will live again as a hit, and hinted that he might play shows framed around Devil Without A Cause. “I think we’ll have a monster single with the way we’re doing ‘Wasting Time’ now, without any of the samples and stuff,” he said. “I think that could be a really big song.”
Though Rock just released his latest album, Rebel Soul, this week, he’s already envisioning the followup, which would be his last under his current deal with Atlantic Records. “Right now I’m thinking I might do a record like I’ve never done,” he said. “I might actually go get song submissions and do four or five country tunes, like country-rockers, just get a Nashville producer for those. Then I’m thinking about getting some of my buddies in the hip-hop business to produce four, five tracks of that, getting my old school buddies like Reverend Run, D-Nice, to write rhymes for me. I would not write anything on the record but just do this half-and-half record, country and hip-hop. I don’t know what it would be like. It would be interesting, that’s for sure. It would kind of go out on the weird side and then I could focus on the next Kid Rock record after that.”
