Kid Cudi unveiled the new exuberant video for his single “Surfin’,” the latest track off the rapper’s upcoming LP Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’.
Filmed before Cudi entered a rehab facility to deal with “depression and suicidal urges,” “Surfin'” finds the rapper in a more jocular mood as he bounces around a neon-lit room, dancing along to the Pharrell Williams-featuring cut with famous friends like A$AP Rocky, Jaden and Willow Smith, producer Hit-Boy and more.
Despite the clip’s bubbly appearance and song’s buoyant beat, the “Surfin'” lyrics hint at some of the issues Cudi was dealing with before entering rehab earlier this month.
“The industry is so full of shit / Welcome y’all to the enema / Nah man, no subliminal / ‘Cause they insecure, they know who they are,” Cudi said; in recent months, Cudi has lashed out at Kanye West and Drake, with his feud with the Toronto rapper reigniting this weekend even as Cudi remains in rehab.
“Surfin'” is Cudi’s second video since his rehab revelation, following the low-key single “Frequency”; both videos appear to have been filmed on the same smoky soundstage.
“My anxiety and depression have ruled my life for as long as I can remember and I never leave the house because of it,” Cudi wrote to fans in October. “The album is still on the way … I wanted to square away all the business before I got here so I could focus on my recovery.”
