Kendrick Lamar Directs Gritty ‘Backseat Freestyle’ Clip

Black-and-white video features scenes of Compton and Paris

Kendrick Lamar keeps it gritty in the new video for "Backseat Freestyle," a track from last year's much-loved major-label debut, good kid, m.A.A.d city. Lamar teamed with Jerome D and Dave Free to direct the clip, which features grainy black-and-white footage of Lamar wandering through his usual haunts in Compton, California, and loitering underneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris, as if to underscore one of the lyrics in the hook. With interludes featuring his father and some serious booty shaking from Sherane, the video has the feel of a snippet from something larger – and Lamar has talked about doing a visual project next.
