On Covered, actress and singer Katey Sagal’s first studio album in nine years, the Sons of Anarchy star takes on songs by Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne, Gillian Welch, Joni Mitchell and more. The project’s first single, which debuts here ahead of the album’s November 11th release, reimagines Tom Petty‘s 1989 classic “Free Fallin’.”

“I really wanted to record a Tom Petty song,” Sagal tells Rolling Stone. “Growing up in the Valley and hearing ‘Free Fallin” all over the radio really resonated with me in so many ways.”
The same might be said about her impression of Jackson Browne, who duets with Sagal on Steve Earle’s “Goodbye.” Elsewhere on Covered, she pays tribute to the California singer-songwriter with a rendition of “For a Dancer,” which originally appeared on his 1974 album Late for the Sky.
Alongside Sagal’s acting career, she has lent backing vocals to artists from Bette Midler and Bob Dylan to Tanya Tucker and Gene Simmons. On Covered, her third studio album, she is backed by the Forest Rangers, who are led by Sons of Anarchy music supervisor and musical director Bob Thiele. Thiele, along with songwriter Tonio K, penned “Follow the River,” the record’s one original number.
