Adding another bizarre controversy to his recent South American tour, Justin Bieber offended many Argentine fans this past weekend by mishandling a flag thrown onstage.
Bieber’s current South American tour passed through Buenos Aires on Saturday night, but the singer’s wild show hit an awkward snag when fans tossed a pair of Argentine flags onto the stage. Bieber wiped them across and off the stage using both his shoes and microphone stand.
Many of Bieber’s Argentine fans were offended by his actions, which were captured in various cell phone videos and posted to Youtube. On Saturday, Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, tweeted that he “spent the day dealing with the pandemonium (Bieber) caused in Argentina.” The Associated Press also noted that disgracing Argentina’s flag is a crime “punishable by up to four years in prison.”
Bieber’s South American trek has been less than stellar: the singer played another show in Buenos Aires the following Sunday, but he cut the show short after only an hour, claiming to be suffering from food poisoning. (The fans, who reportedly paid up to $320 per ticket, were clearly upset, assaulting the pop star with boos.) This was Bieber’s second walk-off of the tour and not the only controversy Bieber has faced while in South America: he was charged with spray-painting graffiti on a wall – a crime that, if convicted, could earn him one year in prison. Also, a Brazilian woman videotaped him while he was sleeping in a hotel room.
