Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen Rule MuchMusic Video Awards
In a year that has already seen the pop charts dominated by the names Carly Rae Jepsen and Justin Bieber, it’s no surprise those two were the big winners at last night’s annual MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto.
Bieber snagged two awards. The clip for his recent single “Boyfriend,” from his upcoming third album, Believe, won for International Video of the Year by a Canadian, while he also took home the UR Fave Artist award, whose winner is chosen by viewers.
But it was Jepsen – whose career saw a big bump after Bieber gave the Mission, British Columbia native his Twitter stamp of approval – who took home the most MMVAs for her smash “Call Me Maybe.” The earworm netted Jepsen Video of the Year, the MuchMusic.com Most Watched Video and the viewer-voted UR Fave Video of the Year.
“Oh, it’s very heavy!” the singer exclaimed as she accepted her Video of the Year trophy, making sure to thank Bieber and his manager Scooter Braun in her speech. It was a solid start for the singer who told Rolling Stone a few weeks back, “I want to do Justin proud,” before they head out on tour together.
Katty Perry also scored a pair of MMVAs, taking home International Video of the Year – Artist for her Eighties-inspired clip “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F),” as well as the fan-selected UR Fave International Artist or Group. Vancouver pop-rockers Marianas Trench also took home two trophies, with their clip for “Haven’t Had Enough” taking home Pop Video of the Year while “Fallout” won Cinematography of the Year.
Other winners included Drake, whose track with Lil Wayne and Tyga, “The Motto,” won the MuchVIBE Hip-Hop Video of the Year. Show co-hosts LMFAO locked down the International Video of the Year – Group award for “Sexy And I Know It,” and the Sheepdogs grabbed the MuchLOUD Rock Video of the Year for their track “I Don’t Know.”
The night also featured performances from LMFAO, Bieber, Perry and Jepsen, who actually took to the stage twice – first for “Call Me Maybe” and then later for “Wild Ones,” alongside Flo Rida.
