Julian Casablancas Proposes New Mets Theme Song

Former Met Keith Hernandez: “I would get a kick hearing what Julian can do”

Julian Casablancas has been on the road with the Strokes and prepping a new album with his band, but he’s already thinking about his next project: writing a TV theme song for the New York Mets. “I’m totally serious,” he tells Rolling Stone in our latest issue. “I have some ideas, I have to see if they like it. I’ve got a jar stuffed with songs, all these ideas that are just me humming into a recording device.”

Rolling Stone reached out to see what he thought of Casablancas’ idea. “As a Strokes fan, I would get a kick out of hearing what Julian can do with the song,” Mets announcer (and diehard music fan) Keith Hernandez tells Rolling Stone. “It could be interesting and I am sure baseball fans, and especially Mets fans, would enjoy hearing it.” It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the Mets — they’ve recently spiraled south in the standings, pitcher Johan Santana is in legal hot water, and closer Francisco Rodriguez was arrested for allegedly fighting with his father-in-law — so a Casablancas-penned theme song might boost team morale. “I loved to hear “Meet the Mets” when I played,” says Hernandez. “It kind of got us going.”

In the latest issue of RS, Casablancas also opens up about reuniting with his band, their upcoming album, his solo disc Phrazes for the Young and his desire to produce a Pearl Jam song. “That would be a dream, because I’m a fan,” he says.
