One month after Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood plays his sinewy score for There Will Be Blood for the first time ever, in London, he will perform the soundtrack live in New York City. Teaming with Wordless Music Orchestra, a New York band comprised of more than 50 musicians, Greenwood will play an early 20th Century amplified keyboard, the ondes Martenot, as the film plays on a 50-foot movie screen in the United Palace Theater; the Wordless Music website claims it’s the second-largest movie screen in the city. The performances are scheduled for September 19th and 20th, and tickets go on sale May 14th.

Where Did ‘There Will Be Blood’ Rank Among the 10 Best Movies of the 2000s?

There Will Be Blood was nominated for eight Academy Awards – and won two – but did not get a Best Original Score nod for Greenwood’s contributions. The selection committee claimed it was not “original” and deemed it ineligible because the Radiohead guitarist interpolated music from his own oeuvre and elements of compositions by Johannes Brahms and Arvo Pärt.

Greenwood has continued to score films, working with There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson on The Master and currently writing music for Anderson’s next film, an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 crime novel Inherent Vice. That film, whose plot concerns a detective in search of a kidnapped girl in 1960s Los Angeles, is set to star Master actor Joaquin Phoenix in a major role, alongside Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Benecio Del Toro and Maya Rudolph.
